There are ways to carve out a little personal space. To complete this How-To you will need: Curtains, preferably blackout ones Screens or freestanding curtain dividers Headphones A loft bed Bed risers Cork paneling Step 1: Decide private areas Decide with your roommate what areas you'd like to cordon off as private. Ideally, you want the room arranged so neither of you has to smell the other person's dirty laundry or see them get lucky. Tip: Dividing the room down the middle is not necessarily the best choice. Step 2: Take stock of furniture Take stock of the furniture in the room. A dresser or wardrobe can double as a space divider, letting you study — or not — in peace. Step 3: Arrange beds strategically Try placing one bed against a wall, with the back of one desk next to the bed. Arrange the other bed and desk similarly, but against the opposite wall. This way, whether you're sleeping or studying, you won't be in each other's faces. Tip: If possible, loft one of the beds, or lift it off the ground a few ...

Loft Bed Plans - Important Safety Tips for Building a Loft Bed

!±8± Loft Bed Plans - Important Safety Tips for Building a Loft Bed

Building a loft bed for yourself or your child is a fun project as well as a practical one in saving space. However, when reviewing loft bed plans it is not only important to follow the instructions carefully but also practice a few important safety guidelines. Since these types of beds are build high off the ground they can be in a precarious position so it is crucial to be careful with this woodworking project.

Here are some safety guidelines that will help when starting your loft bed building project.

Measure Carefully

It is important that when following the loft bed plans to measure your room carefully. Since every room size is different as well as the height of the person using the bed you want to make sure that you measure the height above the bed and under the bed precisely. You want there to be enough room below the ceiling for the person to get out of bed without hitting their head and plenty of room underneath so there is enough room to walk around safely underneath. You may even consider recessing the mattress within the platform frame to gain more headroom above the bed.

Build a Strong and Evenly Spaced Ladder

Building a ladder for the bed is the most important part of the project. The ladder should be pieced together with sturdy thick hard wood and the rungs should be spaced evenly. The height of the ladder should of course be measured after the loft is in place so the correct quantity of ladder rungs are used and the two upright pieces of wood match up to the bottom of the bed. Depending on the type of loft bed you are building the ladder can also act as extra support to the loft bed. As a general rule of thumb the rungs should be spaced about 8 inches apart but that can vary. As long as the rungs are evenly spaced, then the ladder will be considered safe.

Safety Consideration for Kids

Loft beds are often designed and built with kids in mind. However keep in mind that federal guidelines recommend that the upper bunk or a loft bed only be used for children age six or older. Consider a nightlight close to the ladder in case the child needs to get up in the middle of night and of course it is important to teach the child not to climb up or down from the bed by any means other than the ladder.

Keep these safety tips in mind when building this project with directions from loft bed plans. These types of beds are enjoyable to build and it is a creative way to find more space in a room. It is important to follow safety measures carefully with any woodworking project, but especially when building beds that are lifted so high off the ground and can be potentially dangerous if not built or used in the appropriate manner.
